HomeBaker Series: Cupcake Therapy

Introducing our new series on Loudoun HomeBakers: Folks who bake amazing things in their homes and have created a business from it. Our first of the HomeBaker series features Lainie Walsh with Cupcake Therapy.

Imagine getting an invitation to spend an evening sampling gourmet cupcakes. Bliss, right? That event was the launch of Cupcake Therapy.

Baker Lainie Walsh had always found solace in baking for her family’s events. When she decided to go pro in 2011, she invited more than 30 friends and neighbors to help her refine her from-scratch recipes. Her reasoning: She wanted a product that was proven to make people feel good.

Eight years – and literally thousands of cupcakes – later, Lainie’s friends now stand in line to get her popular flavor combinations like the Coffee Break, a mocha cupcake topped with coffee buttercream, or the Pumpkin Spice, a spiced cupcake topped with a brown sugar cinnamon cream cheese frosting. Cupcake Therapy is a tradition at Heritage High School’s Varsity Football games and vendor events, in addition to the custom orders Lainie fulfills all week long.

Splitting time between a full-time job in long-term care management and baking often means early morning and late nights. Lainie doesn’t seem to mind at all. The process is fulfilling for her, knowing that the cupcakes and cake pops will be part of family celebrations, holidays and milestone birthdays.

Given the popularity of her cupcakes, we wondered if Lainie would ever consider opening a storefront. She shakes her head and explains, “The personal interaction is why I like baking from home. I remember all of my customer’s favorite flavors. I couldn’t do that at a shop.”

Which flavor should you try? Year-round Cupcake Therapy’s Salted Caramel, a chocolate-caramel cupcake topped with salted caramel buttercream and garnished with a caramel drizzle and chocolate shavings, is a best seller. Around the holidays the Red Velvet Mint, a red velvet cupcake topped with a cream cheese, white chocolate and peppermint frosting, is popular, and during summer it the Lemon Dream, a lemon cupcake topped with a lemon, white chocolate and cream cheese frosting.

Her delicious creations include:

  • 16 cupcake and cake pop flavors, gluten free options, and more than 20 frosting and filling flavors
  • Seasonal Signature and Gourmet combinations
  • Order by the dozen
  • Mini cupcakes, cupcake cakes, cakes and custom decoration are available
  • Cupcake decorating parties
