Greenhill Vineyards Philosophy

The sun was with us as we set out for an Inside Loudoun shoot day destination on a humid day in May. Arriving at Greenhill Winery & Vineyards just east of Middleburg, VA, after navigating the green slopes, curves, shady glens and open spaces along country roads, we commented on our good fortune. After all, our proximity to the lush and peaceful landscape of Virginia wine country is a glorious part of living in Loudoun County not to be underestimated. The Greenhill Vineyards, formerly the Swedenburg Estate Winery, was purchased in 2013 from the Swedenburg family by David Greenhill, entrepreneur and President of global satellite communications company, Satcom Direct.

Two years ago, following renovations, the new Greenhill Vineyards Tasting Room opened to the public. The new Tasting Room, adjacent to the re-designated and redesigned Farm Store, is an elegant, trendy, nature inspired setting offering counter tastings or more intimate table tastings to both walk-ins and those with reservations. The rustic barnwood bar is sleek and modern. Large and small tables are available beside the expanse of windows looking out over the serenely breathtaking 36 acre landscape of wide green hills, including 11 acres of immaculate vineyards, a natural pond and portion of Little River. Paved walkways wind about. A patio and covered porch offer seating and dotting the vast lawn are more tables covered by bright red square umbrellas. All this with the Blue Ridge Mountains misty along the horizon.

What you will be tasting, swirling, sniffing and swooshing at the new Greenhill Vineyards Tasting Room are Greenhill’s own wines, 90% of which are from grapes grown on site. Greenhill’s fifteen different varieties of wine include 2017 San Francisco Wine Competition double gold winning 2015 Chardonnay and 2017 Chardonnay Reserve winner at the 2019 Virginia Wineries Association Annual Governor’s Cup. The flagship wine at Greenhill is Philosophy. There are related others: Superstition, Theology, and Ontology (the study of being), also named by David Greenhill who just coincidentally holds a Yale Masters in Philosophy and Theology. High ratings go to the menu of plated cheese accompaniments like the baked brie plate, the mediterranean plate, caviar and sparkling wine plate and the cheese board with charcuterie. Don’t leave your visit to The Greenhill Tasting Room without checking out the Farm Store offerings: Greenhill’s own herd of grass fed Charolais cattle and Middleburg sourced eggs, baked goods and produce.
