It’s Saturday Sips at Six…and tomorrow is more than just an Autumn Sunday – it’s Veterans Day!

I for one am so appreciative of the sacrifices that our Veterans and their families make for our country that I was inspired to create a cocktail to honor them – the Pearicano. Since Veterans and their families are the perfect pair, this combination of whiskey and sweet vermouth-soaked pears is a reboot of the classic Americano cocktail. Truth be told, the classic Americano is a combination of Italian liquors – but my Pearicano is most definitely all American!

A Veteran friend of mine told me that whiskey (especially Jack Daniel’s) is important to those deployed far from home – so Gentleman Jack Tennessee Whiskey is the perfect base spirit for this Pearicano concoction. Middleburg’s own Mt. Defiance Cidery has a barrel aged, made from apple brandy, Sweet Vermouth that lends just the right support to this doubly mellow drink.

But wait – don’t forget the pears in the Pearicano! To decorate this Veterans Day drink, soak thinly wedged pears in the Sweet Vermouth for several hours or overnight to gently impart a lovely hint of Autumn!

The Pearicano
2 oz. Jack Daniel’s Gentleman Jack Double Mellowed Tennessee Whiskey
1 oz. Mt. Defiance Sweet Vermouth
Sweet Vermouth Soaked Pear Wedge

Pour ingredients into a rocks glass and sip slowly either neat or on the rocks. Whiskey and Sweet Vermouth may also be shaken with ice and served on the rocks with sparking water or club soda.
